Different Types Of Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is contained within the fats that are carried throughout the bloodstream and in the cells of the body. This essential part of the body helps to form certain hormones and cell membranes to help the body function properly. When a person has a high level of cholesterol in their body they are at risk for coronary heart disease which can cause a heart attack.

In order to understand how to maintain the levels of cholesterol you must first understand the various types. LDL and HDL are the most common types and can be identified based upon what they do and how they affect the body.

LDL Cholesterol

LDL cholesterol or low density lipoprotein is the major cholesterol carrier within the blood. When there is too much of this it will build up slowly over a period of time in the artery walls and travel to the heart and brain. When this combines with other substances in the body it will create a plaque that will block the arteries.

If a clot should form because of this it will make the person at a high risk of heart disease. People who already have heart disease should have less than 100mg/dL or even less than 70mg/dL. This is the reason why this type of labeled as ‘bad cholesterol’. If you have bad cholesterol you will want to sit down with your doctor and put together a treatment and diet plan that will help to lower these levels.

HDL Cholesterol

According to research one third of the cholesterol in the blood is carried through HDL. Researchers believe that HDL will carry the cholesterol away from the arteries and through the liver where it is able to be passed out of the body. It is also believed that this will remove the extra cholesterol from the plaque and slow down any growth that has begun. This is labeled as ‘good cholesterol’ and will help to reduce heart disease.
